Week 3 of Simplify Your Life was about coming up with a family motto, creed, vision or statement. We came up with Why not laugh? kind of by accident and a bit flippantly but it’s grown on us all. It started on the way to swimming this morning when I mentioned this week’s task in the car. Dave immediately scoffed and made a joke and then said, “Sorry, I shouldn’t laugh.” Lillian piped up from the back, “Why not laugh?” and we both said hey, that’s a pretty good statement actually! Humour was number 4 on my list of values and laughing is certainly important to us as a family.
In Deb’s post she lists a series of questions to discuss as a family to help come up with ideas for the statement. We had a chat tonight while Dave was cooking dinner and I thought I’d share some of Lillian’s answers (she’s four and a half.)
What is important to us? What do we value?
Lillian said that cleaning the bathroom was important to her. We said sorry we’re letting you down there.
Are there things we see other families do or how they behave that we would like to have in our home life?
Have dessert every night. Eat choc-chip cookies every day. Have toys in my bedroom. Does this mean we’re going to do this now?
If people talked about our family how would we want them to describe us?
We’re always happy and draw love hearts every day. Always friendly all the time even to a stranger and say hello, what’s your name? (I love this answer.)
As a family we are at our best when we ______ .
When we work together.
If you could create a perfect day what would it include?
Playing with friends. Playing soccer. Lots of finger painting. Eating choc chip cookies.
We are most happy when ________.
On my birthday.
So I think Why not laugh? fits her answers well. I’m going to print this out and stick it somewhere to remind us all.

This is AWESOME! What a great motto! Love Lilly’s answers to your questions, I get the feeling she likes choc-chip cookies…a lot!
…Off to find out what ‘Simplify your life’ is…
hahaha – and indeed – i laughed. go give that child a packet of choc chip cookies – Lillian sounds like she’s totally succeeded in embracing the simple pleasures of life (oh to think like a child again)
well it certainly made ME laugh! and you know what they say, laughter is the best medicine. I love the responses from the kids. honest, innocent, raw. We could all use more laughter.
If only we could live life like our children see it!!! She is very clever to answer the questions – even if her life seems to revolve around choc chip cookies
loved it thank you for sharing!!!!!
I LOVE it so much. this is why i also think it is important to chat with our kids – even if just to connect about it – they do have insights (and fun!). I love her answer to how they would describe you and her perfect day (obviously she really loves choc chip cookies!). I know a lot of people feel pressure on these challenges (and it stresses me out that they are stressing) so am off to share how you interpreted this and made it work for you! – awesome stuff!
Why not laugh? Why not! Love it!
You win the award for cutest mission statement. Love it. Simple and yet says so much. Give that girl a packet of chic-chip cookies !!
if mine would talk maybe she would have said why not raspberry?!
Perfect!
I think I already wrote on the HLS page….but worth repeating – just love the answers the daughter gave. My son didn’t get it at all (only just turned 3) so I’m hoping to do a review each year and see what he comes up with. Thanks so much for a great read.
I mean ‘your daughter’ – not the daughter. Just saw that as it went off into the internet world so not sure if I can edit it!
this is awesome! i love it!
The simplicity of her answers is wonderful. She knows what she’s about!
